Default *gasp* Naughty naughty WoW! (Blizzard)

Browsing around on other forums, I found this.

http://www.rootkit.com/blog.php?newsid=358

I guess this is another good reason for GW instead of WoW.

Seen it on the Gw vs. Wow thread...
Kind of amusing though, people with spyware cleaner uppers would find this one in a sec.

Forget what I said.

Not much. WoW installs ultra-intrusive spyware on your computer to make sure you're not cheating.

Because we all know a total invasion of their customer's privacy is worth it when it comes down to those token bannings.

Really? hmmm...another reason not to play that game. And that it cost money per month! *Sigh* It looks like a fun game too!

Yeah, I mean, I hate botters and all, but you'd think Blizzard would come up with a way to combat them that doesn't involve putting a Trojan on your computer that is not only able to read the headers of your programs but can also specifically open up programs on your computer behind your back for that purpose.

Haha, I can see it now...the guys at Blizzard hanging around at the office after a days work done:

------------------------------------------

Joe: Nick, come take a look at this dumbass! Over 80GB of porn, on a seperate hard drive even!

Ston: Holy shit, this guy from Ashtabula could buy out best buy with all the money he's got worth in shit downloaded with BitTorrent. Might have to send this guy an email. You know the whole "Send me Far Cry and it's no-cd crack via this email or I'll report your IP address to the federal police for severe acts of piracy" email thing, I've always wanted Far Cry.

John: F**k Far Cry you moron, Guild Wars for the win!

Joe: You're fired, John.

John: ...

-------------------------------------

Haha...now THAT would be great.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. Do you think there is someone in Blizzard's office secretly getting millions of reports of whats on peoples screens every few seconds and scanning them for some information? If anything, its only reporting known cheats. It would then auto-generate a form saying "user xxx on account xxx is suspicious, investigate". Thus, nothing of yours is comprimised.

Honestly, what am I missing here?

I think you missed the part of the article that said it only relates back open windows. The most this thing would see is a window open in explorer titled "porn". It could be filled with mp3s for all the program knows.

It's called exaggeration for the sake of comedy, buddy.

I'm not so much worried about Blizzard stealing my social security number or reading my e-mails as much as the fact that a trojan that accesses programs without my permission is still a goddamn trojan that accesses programs without my permission.

So yes, I'm worried about this. I'm worried about what sort of precedent this is going to set and how it's going to be handled when/if this goes to court.

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/termsofuse.shtml

Look under 13. Acknowledgements. I think being something you agree to in the Terms of Use is pretty clear evidence that it's not made up.

World of Warcraft does indeed install a program that snoops on your computer and accesses your programs. The agreement to what they are allowed to do with their spyware is vague enough to be make me very concerned is starting a trend I don't like one bit.
